Local tip: The garden terrace facing the fjord is the best single spot — walk there first and then do the house tour.

Damsgård Manor (Damsgård Hovedgård) is a wooden rococo manor house built around 1770 on the Laksevåg shore of Puddefjorden, about 4 kilometres from Bergen's city centre. It is considered the finest surviving example of Norwegian wooden rococo architecture and one of the best-preserved 18th-century manor houses in Scandinavia. The main building, outhouses, and formal garden are intact. Entry is low, crowds are nonexistent, and the building itself is extraordinary — a reminder that Bergen's merchant class in the 18th century had considerable architectural ambition.

The building

The manor was built for Bergen merchant and customs official Herman Reimers around 1770. The main house is two storeys in pale yellow with white detailing, its facade organised in the restrained symmetry of late rococo design. The interiors retain their original panelling, stucco ceilings, and much of the period furniture. The ground-floor rooms were for entertaining; the upper floors were private apartments. The kitchen wing and outbuildings to the rear — icehouse, stable, and servants' quarters — give a full picture of how an 18th-century Bergen merchant estate actually functioned.

The garden

The formal garden between the manor and the fjord has been restored to its 18th-century layout — geometric beds, clipped hedges, and a terrace overlooking Puddefjorden. In summer the garden is planted with period-appropriate flower varieties. The view from the terrace takes in the fjord and the hills beyond Laksevåg; it is the kind of view that justified building a country manor 4 kilometres from town. The garden is freely accessible even when the house is closed.

Getting there

Damsgård is in Laksevåg, on the western side of Puddefjorden — across the water from the city centre. Bus 16 runs from Torget (the main square) and takes about 20 minutes to the Damsgård stop. The manor is a short walk from the bus stop. A taxi from central Bergen costs 100–150 NOK and takes about 10 minutes. The route across the Puddefjorden bridge gives a good view of the manor approach.
