Day trips from Bergen
Bergen sits at the edge of some of the most dramatic scenery in Europe. Within two to three hours you can be on a mountain railway descending into a UNESCO fjord, kayaking on glassy water, or walking under a waterfall. Here's what to do with a day outside the city.
Flåm
The most scenic train ride in Europe, a UNESCO fjord, and a village at the end of the world.
Ride the Flåmsbana railway down to the world's deepest fjord — the classic Norwegian day trip from Bergen.
Voss
Norway's adventure capital — skydiving, white water, and a gondola above the treeline, 75 minutes from Bergen.
Bergen's closest adventure hub: skydiving, rafting, zip-lining, and kayaking, plus a beautiful lake and mountain gondola.
Hardangerfjord
Norway's orchard fjord — apple blossoms in May, massive waterfalls year-round, and Trolltunga for the brave.
Norway's second-longest fjord is famous for apple orchards, Vøringsfossen waterfall, and Trolltunga — one of the world's most iconic hikes.
Mostraumen Fjord Cruise
Bergen's best afternoon: three hours on a boat through increasingly dramatic fjord scenery, back in time for dinner.
A 3-hour fjord cruise departing directly from Bryggen, squeezing through the narrow Mostraumen strait between sheer rock walls.
Sognefjord
The world's deepest fjord — 1,308 metres at its deepest, 205km long, and genuinely impossible to photograph adequately.
The world's longest and deepest fjord demands a full day from Bergen, but delivers scenery that's impossible to overstate.
Stave Churches
Norway's most distinctive medieval architecture — wooden churches from the 12th century that somehow survived 900 years.
Several stave churches are reachable from Bergen on a half-day — medieval wooden masterpieces that make every other church look overdressed.
Rosendal Barony
Norway's only barony, a baroque rose garden, and a manor house on the Hardangerfjord — almost entirely off the tourist radar.
A 17th-century barony with a baroque garden at the foot of the Folgefonna glacier. One of the most beautiful places in western Norway.
Osterøy
A farming island connected by bridge to Bergen — traditional wooden churches, apple orchards, and fjord valleys without a tour group in sight.
Bergen's rural neighbour — a large island of farms, valleys, and old churches accessible by bus in 45 minutes. What Norway looked like before the tourists arrived.
Herdla
A flat island bird reserve at the mouth of the fjord — thousands of migratory birds, WWII bunkers, and almost no other tourists.
An island nature reserve 45 minutes from Bergen by bus, with a significant migratory bird population, wartime fortifications, and coastal walking in every direction.
Steinsdalsfossen
A 50-metre waterfall you walk behind — accessible by bus from Bergen in under 90 minutes.
One of Norway's most accessible waterfalls, with a path that takes you directly behind the curtain of water. An easy half-day from Bergen.
Vøringsfossen
Norway's most spectacular waterfall — 182 metres into a gorge above Hardangerfjord, at the edge of the Hardangervidda plateau.
The most dramatic waterfall in Norway, dropping 182 metres into a narrow gorge on the inner Hardangerfjord. Best reached by car; a long but rewarding day from Bergen.
Finse
A mountain plateau station at 1222 metres, with no road access, a glacier on the doorstep, and the filming location for Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back.
The highest station on the Bergen Railway — glacier hiking, Nordic skiing, and true wilderness reached by train in about 2.5 hours from Bergen.
Undredal
A village of 100 people at the end of Nærøyfjord, with the smallest stave church in regular use in Scandinavia.
A tiny fjord village accessible by boat from Flåm — home to Scandinavia's smallest active stave church and a goat cheese tradition that dates back centuries.
Stalheim
Thirteen hairpin bends descending into one of Norway's most dramatic gorges — and a hotel at the top that has been there since 1885.
A legendary Norwegian viewpoint above Nærøydalen gorge, reached from Bergen by car in about 2 hours. The Stalheimskleiva hairpin road is one of the steepest in Norway.
How to pick your day trip
The Mostraumen fjord cruise departs from Bryggen and is back in three hours. No booking stress, departures daily in season.
The Flåm railway and Nærøyfjord ferry. Take the 07:50 Bergen train to make the most of the day — the Flåmsbana sells out in summer so book ahead.
Hardangerfjord and Trolltunga require good conditions. Check the forecast the night before and keep Mostraumen as a wet-weather backup.
