Osterøy

A farming island connected by bridge to Bergen — traditional wooden churches, apple orchards, and fjord valleys without a tour group in sight.

Bergen's rural neighbour — a large island of farms, valleys, and old churches accessible by bus in 45 minutes. What Norway looked like before the tourists arrived.

Local tip: Go in September for the apple harvest — roadside stalls sell fresh-pressed juice and fruit from the island's orchards, and the autumn colour in the valleys is excellent.

Osterøy is a large island municipality east of Bergen, connected to the mainland by the Osterøy Bridge. It takes 45 minutes by bus from Bergen city centre. There are no major tourist attractions on Osterøy, no fjord cruise operators, and no gift shops. What it has instead is a working agricultural landscape of valleys, farms, old wooden churches, and fjord views that have changed relatively little in 150 years. For visitors who have spent a few days in Bergen's tourist circuit and want to see something that feels genuinely Norwegian rather than curated for visitors, an afternoon on Osterøy is a good antidote.

What to do on Osterøy

The main village is Lonevåg, where the bus arrives. From there, marked walking trails fan out across the island. The trail to Rundevatnet lake (about 90 minutes return) passes through birch forest and gives views over Osterfjorden. The old church at Bruvik, a few kilometres from Lonevåg, is a 19th-century wooden church in the traditional Norwegian style with a graveyard that includes some of the oldest headstones on the island. The road north from Lonevåg passes through apple orchards in the lower valley — the island has a significant tradition of apple and pear growing, and in autumn the roadside stalls selling local fruit and juice are a good reason to visit.

Cycling on Osterøy

Osterøy is one of the better cycling destinations within reach of Bergen. The island roads carry relatively little traffic, the terrain is varied without being punishing, and the Osterfjord views from the eastern shore road are excellent. You can bring a bicycle on the bus from Bergen (check with Skyss for current rules and costs) or hire one locally. A loop of the northern part of the island takes about four hours at a relaxed pace. The Osterøy municipality website has downloadable route maps.

Getting there

Bus 480 or 481 from Bergen bus station (Bystasjonen) runs to Lonevåg on Osterøy, taking about 45 minutes and crossing the Osterøy Bridge with good views of the fjord. Buses run roughly hourly through the day. Check skyss.no for the current timetable. There is no ferry to Osterøy — all public transport uses the bridge. A return day trip from Bergen is easily done with several hours on the island.
